Kannawidan: home for brilliant individuals and a vibrant culture that dates back in time

Kanawidan is the most anticipated festival in Ilocos Sur. Many tourists travel to Ilocos Sur to witness this much-anticipated event. Many activities are held to commemorate this wonderful event, which everyone thoroughly enjoys. However, it is not only concerts and trade fairs that entertain people; the Kannawidan festival has a much deeper meaning that will astonish you.

Here are some of the reasons why the Kannawidan Festival is significant:

      (1) Ilocos region separation - The provinces of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte were separated by royal decree on February 2, 1818. To commemorate this event, the Kannawidan festival is held every February 2nd to commemorate the establishment of the province of Ilocos Sur. (2) Showcase talent and skills - Ilocanos are gifted, and they have the traits of being hardworking, appreciative, simple, and determined. This is what they are well-known for. They were given the opportunity to show off their skills in front of the crowd for recognition and pride. (3) Showcase of local products and industries - As we all know, the province of Ilocos Sur is home to many industries and high-quality, one-of-a-kind products handcrafted by Ilocanos, which should be displayed around the world and should be proud of. Some are abel making and burnay jar making are old industries that luckily still exist because this is the province's identity. Aside from these crafts, there are irresistible Ilocano dishes that will entice tourists to return. This leads to: (4) Economical boost - Small businesses benefit the economy by providing a service to a large number of tourists. This will enable them to earn more money. (5) Religious expression - It is the Ilocanos' way of thanking the Almighty not only for the abundant blessings but also for the province's rich heritage, which includes close family ties among the Ilocanos. It is customary for a mass to be held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral at the start of the festival. It is followed by a procession around Vigan City of the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes and images of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Provincial DepEd officials usually attend the mass and procession. This event exemplifies the Ilocanos' deep religiosity.

It's amazing how diverse and rich our culture is. Ilocanos' natural talents must be recognized. This annual celebration shows our appreciation. We must embrace our vibrant culture because it defines who we are and defines our identity.
